Working Memory is not a named component of the Allen Cognitive Disabilities Model. The model centers on levels of cognitive disability and uses three core ideas to guide practice: Cognitive Disability as the framework for understanding how thinking and processing influence task performance; Task Equivalence, which means adapting the activity so its demands match the person’s cognitive level; and Just Right Challenge, which keeps tasks at the right level of difficulty to promote engagement and learning. While working memory is a cognitive function that can affect performance, it isn’t listed as a separate component within this model. In practice, you assess the person’s cognitive level, select an activity that matches that level (task equivalence), and adjust the complexity to be just challenging enough (just right), rather than treating working memory as a distinct element of the model.
